An atom has a mass number 35 and the atomic number 17. The number of neutrons in its nucleus are ________.

For any element, Mass number = Number of nucleons

  • Nucleons = Number of protons + Number of neutrons
  • Therefore, Mass number = Number of protons + Number of neutrons
  • Number of neutrons = Mass number - Number of protons …….. (i)

For an electrically neutral species like atom of any element, Atomic number = Number of protons

  • Atomic number = 17 (Given)
  • Therefore, Number of protons= 17

Mass number = 35 (Given)

  • By substituting the values in (i)
  • Number of neutrons = 35- 17= 18

Therefore, an atom has a mass number 35 and the atomic number 17. The number of neutrons in its nucleus are 18.
