Question

An atom has complete K and L shell. Is it an atom of a metal, non metal, novel gas? Justify

Open in App
Solution

The atom will be that of a noble gas, because, if the K and L shells are filled, it means that ( 2 + 8 = 10 ) have been completely filled. That is, it is in its octet.

Hence, it is an atom of a noble gas.

Explanation

The atom would be a noble gas. This is because there is no space for the atom to accept and it cannot donate as it is stable. Hence the Atom would be a noble gas.

If the name of the element is asked, then:

We know no of electrons: K shell + L shell

= 2+8

=10

Atomic No (Z)= no of electronsin a stable atom

Hence Z is 10 and element with Z=10 is Neon
