Question

An atom has mass number 32 and 16 neutrons. The number of electrons revolving around its nucleus are _________.

Open in App
Solution

Mass number = 32 (Given)

Number of neutrons = 16 (Given)

  • Mass number: Mass number of an element is equal to the number of nucleons present in the atom.
  • Mass number = Number of protons+ Number of neutrons
  • Number of protons = Mass number- Number of neutrons
  • On substituting the values in above equation
  • Number of protons = 32- 16 = 16

In the case of an atom that is electrically neutral, the number of protons= number of electrons

Therefore, the number of electrons = 16

Therefore, if an atom has mass number 32 and 16 neutrons. The number of electrons revolving around its nucleus are 16.
