An atom consists of an equal number of protons and electrons.

The charges of proton and electron have equal magnitude but the magnitude of charges is opposite i.e. $+1$ and $-1$ respectively.

Thus, the total positive charge of protons is equal to the total negative charge of an electron. Therefore, the atom as a whole is electrically neutral.
