Question

An atom is made of charged particles called protons and electrons. Yet, an atom is electrically neutral. Explain.

Solution

An atom consists of an equal number of protons and electrons.

The charges of proton and electron have equal magnitude but the magnitude of charges is opposite i.e. +1 and -1 respectively.

Thus, the total positive charge of protons is equal to the total negative charge of an electron. Therefore, the atom as a whole is electrically neutral.
