An atom with two valence electrons will necessarily will have a valency of two.Do you agree?.Explain.

  • Generally alkaline earth metals or second group elements will have valency 2.
  • eg;Calcium:2, 8, 8, 2. It can lose these two valence electrons while taking part in chemical reactions.
  • Helium is a noble gas it has only two electrons and an electronic configuration: 2.
  • Since the helium atom has 2 electrons in the K shell, it has a complete, stable electronic configuration. Hence it does not take part in chemical reactions and has a valency of zero.
  • Hence an atom with two valence electrons will not necessarily have a valency of two.
