Solution

The correct option is C

Ionic bond

Atom Y has 1 electron in its valence shell and atom X have 7 electrons in the valence shell. Atom Y acquires a stable configuration by losing 1 electron from its outermost shell and thus become a positive Y ion(Y+). However, X atom which contains 7 electrons in its outermost shell can accept 1 electron donated by Y ion to acquire a stable configuration. So, compound XY is formed as a result of the transfer of electrons from atom Y to atom X to form an ionic bond and the compound XY is called an ionic compound.
