The maximum number of electrons in the shell in given as:
  • K shell: n = 1 ; The maximum number of electrons = 2n2 = 2
  • L shell: n = 2 ; The maximum number of electrons = 2n2 = 8
  • M shell: n = 3 ; The maximum number of electrons = 2n2 = 18
Since, K, L and M shells of the atom are completely filled, they will accommodate the maximum number of electrons. The total number of electrons = Atomic Number = 2 + 8 + 18 = 28
