Question

An effort of 500N is applied through a distance of 0.50m on a machine, whose efficiency is 90% such that resistance is overcome through a distance of 0.04m. Calculate the resistance overcome by the machine.

Solution

1. Definition:

Mechanical advantage:

the ratio of load to the effort is called Mechanical advantage

Mechanical advantage = loadeffort

Velocity ratio:

the ratio of distance traveled by the effort to the distance traveled by the load.

Velocity ratio = effortarmloadarm

2. Solution:

Given that,

Effort = 500N

load arm =0.04m

effort arm = 0.50m

efficiency = 90%

Velocity ratio = effortarmloadarm

= 0.500.04

=12.5

M.A = efficiency x V.R

M.A = 0.9 x 12.5

M.A = 11.25

Resistance overcome by the machine L

L = M.A x Effort

L = 11.25 x 500

L =5625N

3.Conclusion:

The load value is 5625N.
