Question

An electric bulb is designed to consume 55 W when operated at 110 volts. If is connected to a 220 V,50 Hz line through a choke coil in series. What should be the inductance of the coil for which the bulb gets correct voltage?

Solution

We know that,

I=pv=55110=12A

So, p=v2RR=V2p=110255=220Ω

A/C 220v,t=50Hz

Therefore,

I=vz=vR2+x2l=vR2+(ωl)214
=2202(2202+2×π×50×l)22202+4×10×2500l2=4×2202
105l2=2202×3=l2=48400×3105l=1.2H
