Question

An electric bulb is designed to consume 55 W when operated at 110 volts. It is connected to a 220 V, 50 Hz line through a choke coil in series. What should be the inductance of the coil for which the bulb gets correct voltage ?

Solution

Power = 55 W, Voltage = 110 V,

Resistance = V2P

= 110×11055 = 220 W

Frequency(f) = 50 Hz, ω=2πf

= 2π×50=100π

Current in the circuit

= VZ=fracVR2+(ωL)2

Voltage drop across the resistor

= ir= VRR2+(ωL)2

110=220×200(220)2+(100πL)2

= (220)2(220)2+(100πL)2

220×2=(220)2+(100πL)2

(220)2+(100πL)2=(440)2

48400+104π2L2 = 193600

104π2L2=19360048400

= 145200

L2=145200π2×104

= 1.4726

L = 1.2135 1.2 Hz
