Solution

The correct option is B 30

Given:
E1=3E ^i; E2=E ^j

τ1=τ ^k; τ2=τ1

Let, dipole moment, p=px^i+py^j

We know that torque on a dipole in a uniform electric field is

τ=p×E

So, when electric field E1=3E ^i is applied, then torque,

τ1=p×E1

τ ^k=(px^i+py^j)×3E ^i

τ ^k=py^j×3E ^i

As, ^j×^i=^k and py=pcos(90θ)

τ ^k=3pEsinθ ^k

τ=3pEsinθ ........(1)

Now, when electric field, E2= E ^j applied then torque,

τ2=p×E2

τ1=τ^k= pEcosθ ^k

τ=pEcosθ .........(2)

From eqs.(1) and (2)

3pEsinθ=pEcosθ

tanθ=13

θ=30

Hence, option (b) is the correct answer.
