An electric fuse is a safety device used to limit the current in an electric circuit and appliances connected to it from the damages caused by overcurrent. It is a thin piece of wire, made of low melting point material, so that it may melt due to overheating caused by the excess current.

A fuse is always connected in the live wire before the appliance so that as the current in the circuits exceeds the rating of the fuse, it may melt and break the circuit first, before reaching the appliance.
