Question 11
An electrician is carrying out some repairs in your house. He wants to replace a fuse with a piece of wire. Would you agree? Give reasons for your response.
An electric fuse is a device that is used to protect electric circuits and electric appliances from excessive high current caused by the fault in an electric circuit. It is a short piece of wire made of a material of high resistance and low melting point. Material with a low melting point is preferred because whenever a fault occurs in the circuit, the fuse wire should be able to melt quickly. So the electrician is wrong, and he should replace the fuse with only wires having a low melting point and not with any type of wires. Commonly, used fuse wires are zinc, copper and aluminum.
It is always advised to use proper fuses with ISI marks, specified for a particular application rather than just a piece or strip of wire.
