We know that c = vλ v = cλ

and, by Planks Theory

E = hν E = cλ

Now , Energy associated with a photon of 242 nm.

hcλ = 6.626×1034×3.0×108242×109

= 8.21 × 1019 J

Since one atom of Na requires = 8.21 × 1019J for ionization,

6.023 × 1023 atoms of Na for ionization requires.

8.21 × 1019 × 6.023 × 1023 = 49.45 × 104

= 494.5 kJ mol1
