Solution

The correct option is C

494.5 KJ mol-1

We know that, c = νλ ν=cλ

By Planck's theory:

E = hν E = hcλ

Now, energy associated with a photon of 242 nm:

hcλ = 6.626×1034×3.0×108242×109

= 8.21 × 1019 J

Since one atom of Na requires = 8.21 × 1019J for ionization, 6.023 × 1023 atoms of Na for ionization requires:

8.21 × 1019 × 6.023 × 1023 = 49.45 × 104J

= 495.5 KJ mol1
