Question

An electron beam is deflected in a given field. How will you detect whether the given field is a uniform magnetic field or a uniform electric field.

Open in App
Solution

Dear Student,

For a uniform electric field

ma=qE or a=qE/m

if E is in direction of electron beam there will be no deflection
if E is perpendicular to electron beam

S=ut+0.5at2ut+qE2m where q=-1.6×10-19 C
if the field is uniform acceleration will be constant

For a uniform magnetic

ma=qv×Bor, a= qvBsinθm magnitude wisebut since direction of velocity changes so does does that of acceleration.If the field is perpendicular to the beamthe beam will be deflected in a circular trajectorybut for a uniform field magnitude of acceleration will be constant.

Regards.
