Solution

Atomic number:

  • It is defined as the total number of protons present in the nucleus of an atom.
  • It is represented by the letter ‘Z’.

Mass number:

  • It is defined as the sum of the total number of protons and neutrons present in the nucleus of an atom.
  • It is also equal to the sum of the atomic number + the number of neutrons.
  • It is represented by the letter ‘A’.

The given element consists of 15 protons therefore, the atomic number of the given element is 15.

The number of protons and electrons in a neutral element is equal, therefore, the number of electrons in a given element is equal to 15.

Number of protons given=15 Number of neutrons =16

Since, Mass Number= number of protons + number of neutrons

15 + 16 = 31

Therefore, the mass number of the given element is 31.
