An element which can exist as a positive ion in acidic solution and also as a negative ion in basic solution is called amphoteric.

For example Al can exist as positive ion as $[A l (H_{2} O)_{6}]^{3 +}$ (hexaaquaaluminium) in acidic solution.
It can exist as a negative ion as $[A l (O H)_{4}]^{-}$ (tetrahydroxidoaluminate) in basic solution.
