Question

An element X lies in the third period and group 17. Find out Nature – metallic or nonmetallic

Open in App
Solution

The element which lies in the third period and group 17 is non-metallic.

Nonmetallic nature of an element:

  1. Elements possessing upto 3 valence electrons tend to lose electrons to attain noble gas configuration, whereas the elements possessing 4 valence electrons may share, gain or lose electrons to attain noble gas configuration.
  2. Similarly, elements having valence electrons above 4 electrons tend to gain electrons to complete their octets.
  3. It is evident that the electropositivity decreases from left to right in a period, while electronegativity increases in any period in going from left to right.
  4. That is metallic character decreases across the period as we move from left to right, and the non-metallic character increases.
  5. Thus the element X which is present in group 17, seems to have non-metallic character.
