nature - metallic or nonmetallic

Solution

Nature of an element X

  • An element having electrons less than 4 can lose electrons and complete their octet and forms a positively charged ion. This property is known as metallic character.
  • An element having electrons more than 4 can gain electrons and complete their octet and forms a negatively charged ion. This property is known as non-metallic character.
  • As the element X belongs to group 17, the electronic configuration is 1s22s 2 2p 5 then there are 7 electrons in its valence shell.
  • The number of valence electron in element X is 7, it requires only one electron to attain its octet.
  • Thus the element X shows a non-metallic character.
