Question

An elementary current loop is placed in a non-uniform magnetic field as shown in fig. In Column I, different orientations of loop are described and in Column II, the corresponding forces experienced by the loop. Pm is magnetic moment of loop.

Solution

A. In this case the field of loop is along the given field, hence it will experience a force opposite to the axial direction, i.e. Pm.

B. Since the magnetic field is non uniform and lines are denser on left side then right side, force on left side will dominate and hence resultant force will be along positive z direction.

C.Since the magnetic field is non uniform and lines are denser on left side then right side, force on left side will dominate and hence resultant force will be along negative z direction.

D.This case is similar to the previous ones with net force in positive y direction.
