An elements SAz decay to R22285 after emitting 2α particles and 1β particles. Find the atomic number

and atomic mass of the elements S.

Step1. Given data

No. of emitting α- particle is 2.

No. of emitting β- particle is 1.

We known that one α- particles (He24) decay decreases its mass number by 4 units and number protons decrease by 2 units:

Also one β- particles decay does not effect on its mass number but proton number increase by one units .

Step2. Write the equation

SAzR22285+2·He24+β-1°(1)

Step3. Finding atomic mass number

mass number of R22285 is 222units.

mass number of SAZ is Aunits.

Also from the equation (1)

222=A-2×4+1×0A=222+8=230units..

Step4. Finding atomic number

Atomic Number of SAZ is Z

From the equation (1)

85=Z-2×2+1×1Z=85+4-1=88units.

Hence, Atomic number88units. and Atomic mass number 230units of the elements S.( that is S23088).
