Question

An evacuated glass vessel weights 50.0 g when empty, 148.0 g when filled with a liquid of density 0.98 g/mL1and50.5\ gwhenfilledwithanidealgasat760\ mm\ Hgat300\ K$. Determine the molecular weight of the gas.

Solution

Mass of liquid =14850=98 g
Volume of liquid =massdensity=980.98=100 mL
Volume of vessel = Volume of liquid
Mass of gas 50.550=0.5 g
On applying ideal gas equation, we have,
PV=wmRT
760760×1001000=0.5m×0.0821×300
m=123
