Solution

The correct option is A Hibernation in reptiles

Adaptation is a slow, useful, inheritable change in form, function and behaviour which enables an organism to adjust well and successfully in its environment. An organism is considered best adapted to an environment when it possesses inherited traits that enhance its survival and breeding in that environment. It can be of two types: short-term adaptation and long-term adaptation.

Hibernation in reptiles, some mammals and amphibians is an example of short-term adaptation. They do it during the unfavourable conditions. During this period, they slow down their metabolism and utilize the stored nutrients for obtaining the energy. Hence, short term adaptations appear for a short period of time to overcome specific stress or in response to a particular season. These adaptations disappear as soon as the stress is over. They are either inherited or acquired and have little role in evolution.

Different claw shapes in different birds such as ostrich, pigeons, duck, etc. are long term adaptations. These develop in response to struggle for existence in order to survive. They remain present all the time throughout life. These are always heritable and have a major role in evolution.
