Oxygen reacts with nonmetals to form oxides. When there is an excess of these in air due to pollution, then we have a problem.

Because when it rains, these get mixed with the rain water and form acids. Sulfur forms sulfur dioxide and sulfur trioxide, nitrogen forms many compounds like NO,N2O,NO2,N2O5 which are called NOx together. These are not very strong but they can have certain harmful effects like damage to building, plants and even to human skin.
