An ideal contraceptive should have the following features:
i. User-friendly
ii. Easily available and cost-effective
iii. Effective
iv. Irreversible with least side-effects
The word contraception comes from 'contra' which means against and 'conception' relating to conception or fertilisation. In simpler terms, contraception means the process of avoiding fusion of sperm and egg.
Contraceptive method should be user friendly as it should not require too much technical help.
The contraceptive should be easily available in local markets and must be cost-effective so that it can be used by a large group of people. All the contraception methods should be effective enough to stop the process of fertilisation.
Irreversible contraceptives are not desirable in most cases except when the couple decides not to have any more children in the future.
