Question

An ideal gas having initial pressure P, volume V and temperature T is allowed to expand adiabatically until its volume becomes 5.55 V while its temperature falls to T2. How many degrees of the freedom do the gas molecules have?

Solution

TVγ1= constant (Adiabatic change)
T1Vγ11=T2Vγ12
T1T2=(V2V1)γ1
T2=T12
V2=5.55V1
2=(5.55)γ1
Taking log on both sides we get;
γ1=log(2)log(5.55)=0.4
γ1=2f=0.4 (γ=1+2f)
f=5
