An increase in the value of an effective nuclear charges, leads to greater force of attraction of outer electrons towards nucleus. As a result of this, the atomic radius decreases. Also, it becomes difficult to remove the outer electrons due to greater attractive force towards nucleus. Therefore, ionization energy increases. Also, the electrons of the other elements are attracted more. Therefore, electronegativity increases. The increased force of attraction towards nucleus increase the negative value of electron gain enthalpy as energy is released and not the positive value of electron gain enthalpy.
