Question

An inductance of 100 mH and a resistor of 50 ohm are connected in series to an ac source of 230 V, 50 Hz. Calculate the impedance, effective current and phase angle.

L = 100×103 H, R = 50 Ω
V = 230V, f = 50 Hz,
Then, W = 2πf = 2π×50
(a) Impedance of such circuit is,
Z = R2+X2L = R2+(Lw)2
Z =(50)2+(100×103×2π×50)2 =59.04 Ω
(b) Effective current,
i = VZ
= 230 V59.04 Ω = 3.89 A
(c) Phase angle (θ)
cos (θ) = RZ = 5059.04 = 0.84
