Question

An infinite line charge produces an electric field of 9×104 NC1 at a distance of 2 cm. Calculate the linear charge density.

Open in App
Solution

Electric field produced by the infinite line charges at a distance d having linear charge density λ is given by the relation,
E=λ2πϵ0d
λ=2πϵ0dE
Where,
D = 2 cm = 0.02 m
E=9×104 N/C
ϵ0 = Permittivity of free space
14πϵ0=9×109Nm2C2
λ=0.02×9×1042×9×109
=10μ C/m
Therefore, the linear charge density is 10μ C/m.
