Solution

  1. A magnet attracts a magnetic substance or opposite pole of another magnet towards itself.
  2. The same pole of two magnets brought near will always repel each other.
  3. The bar CD is getting attracted on both the poles of a freely suspended magnetic compass.
  4. If the bar CD was a magnet then the same poles will be repelling and only opposite poles will attract.
  5. So, the attraction from both the poles shows that it is not a magnet but a magnetic substance.

Thus, bar CD is a magnetic substance.
