Given:
Weight of iron casting in air, wa=16000 N
Weight of iron casting in water, ww=12000 N
Density of iron, ρi=8000 kg/m3

Let us suppose the total volume of cavities is V.
Now, volume of the iron, V0=massdensity=16000/108000=0.2 m3...(1)
[ weight = mass ×g ]
We know that,
Decrease in weight = upthrust on iron casting
waww=(V0+V)ρwg
[ ρw is density of water ]
1600012000=(0.2+V)×1000×10
[ from (1) ]
0.2+V=0.4
V=0.2 m3 is the volume of cavities.
