Question

An iron pipe 20 cm long has exterior diameter 25 cm. If it's thickness is 1 cm then find the whole surface area of the pipe.

Open in App
Solution

Height of pipe =20 cm

External diameter =25 cm

External radius, R=252=12.5 cm

The thickness of the pipe =1 cm

therefore, Internal radius, r=12.51=11.5 cm

Let the external radius be R and the internal radius be r.

Then Total surface area of the pipe = Outside surface area + inside surface area + Top Base Area + bottom base area

=2πRh+2πrh+π(R2r2)+π(R2r2)

=2πh(R+r)+2π(R2r2)

=2×227×[20(12.5+11.5)+(12.5)2(11.52)] cm2

=447[20×24+(12.511.5)(12.5+11.5)] cm2 [(a2b2)=(ab)(a+b)]

=447[480+24] cm2

=447[504] cm2

=44×72 cm2

=3168 cm2

So, the total surface area of the pipe is 3168 cm2
