An iron rod of diameter 1cm and length 8cm is drawn into a wire of length 18m of uniform thickness. Find the thickness of the wire?

Given, diameter of iron rod = 1 cm
length of iron rod = 8 cm
length of wire = 18 m = 1800 cm

Both iron rod and wire are in the shape of cylinder and we know that the volume of a cylinder is given by π×radius2×h

Volume of the rod = πr2h
=(π)×(12)2×8=2πcm3

Volume of the wire = πr2h
=(π)×(r)2×1800=1800πr2cm3

Iron rod is drawn into a wire of length 18m. Here, the shape is changed but the volume remains same.

Volume of the rod (old solid shape) = Volume of the wire (New solid shape)

2 π=1800πr2

r2=1900

r = 130

Diameter = 2×130=115=0.06cm

Therefore, thickness of the wire is 0.06 cm.
