Question

An ISA 75×65×8 having cross-sectional area, A=976 mm2 is used as a tie member in a truss. The connection of angle section with gusset plate is done using a single row of 4 - 20 mm diameter bolts of grade 4.6 at a pitch and end distances of 60 mm and 40 mm respectively.

The strength of angle governed by block shear considering Fe 410 grade steel is

Solution

Avg=8×(3×60+40)=1760 mm2

Avn=8×(3×60+403.5×22)=1144 mm2

Atg=8×40=320 mm2

Atn=8×(400.5×22)=232 mm2

Strength governed by block shear

Tdb1=fyAvg3γm0+0.9fuAtnγm1

=250×17603×1.1+0.9×410×2321.25=299.43 kN

Tdb2=0.9fuAvn3γm1+fyAtgγm0

=0.9×410×11443×1.25+250×3201.1=267.70 kN

Tdb=267.70 kN
