Question

An n-channel MOSFET has overdrive voltage of 1 V to get the drain current of 1 mA. If the drain current required to be 2 mA, then new overdrive voltage will be

(Assume MOSFET to be in saturation region)

Solution

The overdrive voltage of MOSFET is given by
Vov=VGSVT=1V(given)
In the saturation region of MOSFET,
The drain current, ID=K(VGSVT)2
1 mA=K(1)2
K=1 mA/V2
The new drain current,
IDN=2 mA (given)
For new overdrive voltage, drain current ID2 is
ID2=K(VGSVT)2New
2 mA=1×103(VGSVT)2New(ID2=2 mA) Given
Vov=(VGSVT)New=2=1.414V
