An NaCl molec...
Question
An NaCl molecule is bound due to the electric force between the sodium and the chlorine ions when one electron of sodium is transferred to chlorine. Taking the separation between the ions to be 2.75 × 10
−8
cm, find the force of attraction between them. State the assumptions (if any) that you have made.

Solution
Let the given separation between the ions, i.e. 2.75 × 10
−8
cm, be the separation between the transferred electron and the sodium nucleus.

Q.
When an ionic bond forms, eg Na and Cl, one electron is transferred to chlorine by sodium. It forms one positive ion Na+ and negative ion Cl-. But what happens to protons of both these elements, and no of proton and electron should be equal, now sodium has only 10 electron but 11 protons and chlorine has 10 electron but 9 protons ??? Didn't atoms need to be as a whole neutral?
