Question

An object is at a distance of 20 m from a convex lens of focal length 0.3 m. The lens forms an image of the object. If the object moves away from the lens at a speed of 5 ms1, the speed and direction of the image will be:

Solution

The correct option is D 1.16×103 ms1 towards the lens
By the lens formula,

1v1u=1f

1v1(20)=103

1v=103120

1v=19760v=60197 m

Magnification of lens (m) is given by,

m=(vu)=(60197)20

The velocity of image with respect to lens is given by

VI=m2VO

Negative sign indicates that the direction of velocity of the image is the opposite to that of the object.

Given that. VO=5 ms1

VI=(60×1197×20)2 (5)

VI=1.16×103 ms1 towards the lens

Hence, option (D) is correct.
