Question

An object is moving with a velocity of 20 m/s. A force of 10 N is acting in a direction perpendicular to its velocity. What will be the speed of the object after 10 seconds?

Solution

The force is acting on the object in a direction perpendicular to its velocity, therefore its component along the direction of velocity becomes zero. So, this force can only change the direction of velocity, not its magnitude and hence magnitude of velocity will remain constant. The speed of the object after 10 seconds will remain 20m/s.
NOTE: A force acting in a direction perpendicular to the velocity can only change the direction of velocity, not magnitude.
