Question

An object is placed at a distance of 10 cm from the optical centre of a convex lens with a focal length of 5 cm. Draw a labelled ray diagram to show the formation of the image in this case.

Solution

Given:

the focal length, f=5cm

position of the object =10cm from the lens

Finding the relation between the centre of curvature of the lens and the position of the object:

Here the focal length f is 5 cm then 2f will be 2×f=2×5=10cm

The object is placed 10 cm from the lens, which means the object is at 2F

Finding the position and nature of the image with respect to the lens:

When an object is placed at 2F of a converging lens, then the position of the image formed is at 2F behind the lens (on the right side). The nature and size of the image are real, inverted and of the same size as the object.
