Question

An object is thrown into a deep lake, as it sinks deeper and deeper into the water does the buoyant force upon it increase or decrease?

Solution

Buoyant force is given by the formula:-

  1. Buoyant force=ρgV where ρdenotes the density of the fluid, g denotes acceleration due to gravity, and V denotes the volume of liquid displaced.
  2. So, the buoyant force is directly proportional to the density of the fluid, acceleration due to gravity, and the volume of liquid displaced. It does not depend on the depth the body is submerged.
  3. Hence, as the body sinks deeper and deeper into the water the buoyant force does not change.
