Question

An object is thrown vertically upwards to a height of 10m. Calculate its time taken by the object to reach the highest point.

Open in App
Solution

Step 1: Given data:

Distance travelled, s=10m,

Final velocity, v=0m/s

g=9.8m/s2

We have to calculate the velocity with which it was thrown upward and the time taken by the object to reach the highest point.

Step 2: Formula to be used.

According to the third equation of motion,

v2-u2=2gs

According to the first equation of motion,

t=v-ug

Here, u is initial velocity, g is the acceleration due to gravity, and v is final velocity and t is time.

Step 3: Calculate the velocity with which it was thrown upward.

So,

v2-u2=2gs

02-u2=2×9.8×10

u2=196

u=196

u=14m/s

So, the velocity with which the object is thrown upwards is 14m/s.

Step 4: Calculate the time taken by the object to reach the highest point.

The velocity with which the object is thrown upwards is 14m/s. So,

t=v-ug

t=1.43sec

Hence, the time taken by the object to reach the highest point is 1.43sec.
