We know that $\text{Total Displacement}=\text{Final position}-\text{Initial position}$
So, from the figure, we can say that $AF$ represents the total displacement of the object.
$\Rightarrow AF=\sqrt{A{M}^2+M{F}^2}$
By using the above figure
$AM=3-1.5+0.5=2\text{km}$
$MF=1+0.5=1.5\text{km}$
$\therefore AF=\sqrt{2^2+{1.5}^2}=2.5\text{km}$
