Question

An object of mass 10 kg is placed on the surface of a table of height 1.5 metre. The object is lifted up to a height of 4.5 metre from the ground level. Calculate its potential energy with respect to the surface of the table and also the ground level. (Acceleration due to gravity is 10m/s2.)

Solution

Given:

Mass of the object, m = 10 kg
Initial height/height of the table, hi = 1.5 m
Final height, hf = 4.5 m
Then potential energy of the mass at final height is
Uf=mghf=10×10×4.5=450 J

Position of the mass when it was at the table is
Ui=mghi=10×10×1.5=150 m
Then potential energy of the mass with respect to the table will be
U=mg(hf-hi)=Uf-Ui=450-150=300 J
