Question

An object of mass 100 kg is accelerated uniformly from a velocity of 5 ms1 to 8 ms1 in 6 s. Calculate the initial and final momentum of the object. Also, find the magnitude of the force exerted on the object.

Open in App
Solution

Mass of the object, m=100 kg
Initial velocity of the object, u=5 ms1
Final velocity of the object, v=8 m/s

Thus initial momentum of the object, Pi=mu=100×5=500 kg m s1
Final momentum of the object, Pf=mv=100×8=800 kg m/s

Time taken to change the velocity, t=6 s
v=u+at
8=5+a(6)
a=0.5 ms2
F=ma=100×0.5=50 N
