An object of mass 'm' is allowed to fall freely from point A as shown in the figure. Calculate the total mechanical energy of the object at :
(i) Point A.
.

Solution

Step 1: Given data

Given object of mass=m

Stationary at point A.

Velocity=0

Step 2: Kinetic Energy

K.E=12mv2

Substitute the value in above equation we get,

K.E=12m02=0

Kinetic energy K.E=0

Step 3: Potential energy

=mgh

g is gravitational force, h is height.

substitute the value in above equation we get,

Potential energy U=mg(x+y)

Step 4: Total energy

Totalenergy=U+K.E

Substitute the value in above equation we get,

T=U+K.E=mg(x+y)

Hence the total mechanical energy of the object at point A is T=U+K.E=mg(x+y)
