Total period in office = 9 a.m. to 12 p.m. and 12 p.m. to 5 p.m.
= 3 hours + 5 hours = 8 hours
$∵$ 1 hour = 60 minutes
$∴$ 8 hours = 8 $\times$ 60 = 480 minutes
Ratio of lunch interval to total period = 30 : 480 = 1 : 16 (dividing by 30)
