Question

an open water tight railway wagon of mass 5*103kg coasts at an initial velocity of 1.2m/s without friction on a railway track. Rain falls vertically downwards into the wagon. What change occur in kinetic energy of wagon, when it has collected 103 kg of water ?

Solution

The kinetic energy of the wagon=12×5×103×1.2×1.2=3.6×103JWhen 103Kg of rain water is collected in the wagon then K. E. = 12×6×103×V'2=3.6×103or V'2=1.2Therefore there is no change in the kinetic energy of the wagon.
