Question

An organic compound A(C8H6) gives brick red precipitate with ammoniacal solution of Cu2Cl2. A on treatment with ammoniacal solution of HgSO4 yields B(C8H8O), B gives positive iodoform test B can also be prepared by the reaction of benzene with acetic anhydride in presence of AlCl3 identify A and B.

Compound A, ethynylbenzene reacts with ammoniacal cuprous chloride (Fehling solution) to form red ppt of cuprous oxide. it also reacts with ammoniacal mercuric sulphate to form compound B (acetophenone) which can also be obtained by the acetylation of benzene with acetic anhydride in presence of aluminum chloride (Friedel crafts acetylation). Acetophenone reacts wih iodine in alkaline medium (iodoform test) to form yellow ppt of iodoform.
