Question

an organic Compound A is liquid in room temperature. it is also a good solvent and has the molecular formula C2H6O. A on oxidation gives a compound B which gives effervescence with sodium bicarbonate. A reacts with B in tye presence of sulphuric acid to give another compound C which has a pleasant smell. identify A, B and C and write the chemical equations for the reactions involved in the formation of B and C

Solution

Compound A C2H6O is ethanol.
Ethanol on oxidation gives compound B, which gives effervescence with sodium hydrogen carbonate. This implies it is corresponding carboxylic acid that is ethanoic acid or acetic acid.
reaction:
C2H5OH Oxidation CH3COOH
Now ethanoic acid reacts with ethanol in presence of conc.H2SO4 to yield C, which has pleasant smell. This implies formation of ester that is ethyl acetate.
reaction:
C2H5OH + CH3COOH Conc.H2SO4 CH3COOC2H5
